| The restoration of the
Northern Reaches of the Lancaster Canal has been
considered for many years. Since the 1960s, the Lancaster Canal
Trust and the Inland Waterways Association, recognising the value of
inland waterways, have lobbied for the restoration of this northern
stretch of canal to navigable standard.
Efforts to see the canal restored were strengthened in the 1990s, by
the formation of the Northern Reaches Restoration Group (now renamed
the Lancaster Canal Restoration Partnership), a partnership which
now includes South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County
Council, Kendal Town Council, British Waterways, Lancaster Canal
Trust, The Inland Waterways Association, The Waterways Trust,
Lancashire County Council, Lancaster City Council and other
interested groups. |
