At present
there is no discernible bridge present at this location. However the
profile of the road at this location does rise up slightly and the
road level is several meters above the towpath level. Anecdotal
information suggests that following canal closure the parapets of
the original masonry arch bridge were removed leaving the barrel
which was then in-filled and filled at either side in order to
construct the widened roadway that exists today.
It is proposed that the bridge infill will be
excavated and if possible the original structure will be repaired
and widened to maintain the existing road profile, width and
alignment.
Below the bridge the canal will be cleared and
lined to the original dimensions. The canal will be generally 1.5
meters deep through the bridge. The invert lining of the canal will
be constructed of reinforced concrete.
The adjoining towpaths will narrow to pass under
the bridge as original. A wheelchair access to the towpath will be
provided to the south west of the bridge.
