The original bridge
by which Natland Road crossed the canal was removed following canal
closure and the road was realigned to run straight rather kinked to
cross the former canal line. The only remaining feature from the
original crossing is the western bridge approach ramp which can be
seen on the west side of Natland Road and which is retained above
the adjacent field by a masonry retaining wall.
At present Natland Road crosses the canal route at
approximately the proposed towpath level. A new fixed road bridge
will be constructed which will maintain the existing road alignment
and width. In order to reduce the skew of the crossing and therefore
the effective width the canal approaches will deviate from original.
Below the new bridge a canal channel will be
excavated and lined. The canal will be generally 6.5 meters wide and
1.5 meters deep through the bridge. The invert lining of the canal
will be constructed of reinforced concrete.
The adjoining towpaths will narrow to pass under
the bridge with cycle and wheelchair access to the towpath provided
to the northwest of the bridge.
