PLANS TO REOPEN LANCASTER CANAL AS FAR AS THE LAKE DISTRICT COULD COST UP TO £50 MILLION - Colin Sykes reported that the plan will require tunnelling under the M6 which was built across the canal at three points. A national revival of waterways is in full swing. Once restored, 15 miles of waterway would have marinas and tourist centres and would be expected to attract over 200,000 boat trips a year.

PLANS TO REOPEN LANCASTER CANAL UNVEILED - plans to reopen the LANCASTER CANAL as far as the LAKE DISTRICT have been unveiled today. The project could cost £50 million and involves tunnelling under the M6. It is thought the revival of the waterway would attract over 200,000 boat trips a year. Jane Dougall reported. When the M6 was built in 60s planners built straight over the LANCASTER CANAL but after a national revival of waterways it's been decided to open up 15 miles of the canal from CARNFORTH to KENDAL. Engineers revealed plans for how they intend to tunnel under the motorway.

PLANS TO REOPEN LANCASTER CANAL UNVEILED - plans to reopen the LANCASTER CANAL as far as the LAKE DISTRICT will be unveiled today. The project could cost £50 million and involves tunnelling under the M6. Colin Sykes reported that when the M6 was built in the 1960s, engineers laid the motorway across the LANCASTER canal blocking it in three places and destroying 200 years of heritage, With the national revival of waterways now in full swing. the plan is to reopen the canal from CARNFORTH to KENDAL. Engineers will today reveal plans how they intend to do it by tunnelling under the motorway and reopening 50 miles of canal.

NORTHERN REACHES OF LANCASTER CANAL - Public meeting tonight. STUDIO INTERVIEW: TANIA SNELGROVE, BRITISH WATERWAYS - The 40 mile stretch from LANCASTER to KENDAL passes through beautiful countryside but is unnavigable at present. There are 13 obstructions to the canal including the M6 in three places and restoration would cost £50m. Funding plans are in hand. The project will take a total of five years including detailed planning.

PLAN TO REOPEN KENDAL STRETCH OF LANCASTER CANAL - a grant of 250,000 pounds has been made by South Lakeland District Council. The money was given to a restoration group and the same amount is promised next year. Heather Wainwright reported that South Lakeland Council believes the venture will open up a range of opportunities. The County Council is to strengthen a bridge and Kendal Civic Society is contributing 25,000 pounds. BRITISH WATERWAYS says that the last 14 miles of the canal could be restored by 2008.
