Author: - British Waterways

British Waterways has appointed White Young Green as contractors for ground investigation works for the first phase of the restoration of the dewatered and infilled section of the Northern Reaches of the Lancaster Canal.

The ground investigations on the first phase will commence mostly on the urban portion of the original canal route between Canal Head, Kendal and Natland Road. Some additional areas of research will occur at the crossing of the A590 at Wellheads Lane and Howard’s to the north of Hincaster Tunnel.

Work will begin on site on 20th July and are expected to be completed a week later as part of the engineering feasibility process.

The investigations will comprise of trial pits and boreholes to collect samples for chemical and geotechnical analysis, which will determine the nature of the infill material and to establish the ground conditions for the design of new structures for the restoration.

Jason Leach, Project Manager, British Waterways said: “It is great to see the final piece of the feasibility study completed. This work will allow us to finalise the costs of the restoration and move the project forward.”
