KENDAL BRIDGES BENEFIT FROM GRANTS

Date:- 18 December 2006
Author: - British Waterways

The final stage of restoration work to Castle Bridge in Kendal is now complete, thanks to a grant from the Inland Waterways Association.

Waterways heritage and environmental charity, The Waterways Trust, has helped to raise funds for essential restoration and improvement work for Castle Bridge and Natland Mill Beck Bridge, both of which span the line of the Lancaster Canal.

Castle Bridge, a limestone masonry arch of classic John Rennie design, has already undergone strengthening work. The grant from the Inland Waterways Association has enabled the masonry to be cleaned.

Natland Mill Beck Bridge, a grade 2 listed limestone canal bridge, has also benefited from strengthening and re-pointing work, and the bridge steps have been renovated.

Joanne Darlington, Head of Development England & Wales for The Waterways Trust, said: “This funding means that two key historic structures on the Lancaster Canal have been conserved. The work has also helped maintain the profile of the planned restoration of this waterway. The Lancaster Canal Restoration Partnership, of which we are part, is now developing a project for phase 1 of the Lancaster Canal restoration – Kendal to Natland.”

The work to these historic bridges has been funded by Cumbria County Council, Kendal Town Council, South Lakeland District Council, the Inland Waterways Association, Kendal Civic Society, Lancaster Canal Trust and Friends of the Lake District.”
