The Festival was organised jointly by the IWA
North Lancs & Cumbria Branch and the Lancaster Canal Trust in support of the
campaign to restore the canal from its current terminus at Tewitfield to its
original terminus at Kendal - a distance of some 14 miles.
Some 30 trailed boats travelled over 6,000
miles to attend the Festival and other enthusiasts showed their support by
booking in as camping entries. In all, over 150 people were resident on site
throughout the Festival.
Attractions for the public included an
extensive trade show, live entertainment and a range of catering outlets.
Free trip boat rides were provided on "Waterwitch" and "Roseann" crewed by
members of the Lancaster Canal Trust and the Bridge 19-40 Canal Society
[based on the Union Canal , Scotland] respectively. Around 1,000 members of
the public were able to get afloat over the three days of the Festival.
The IWA's Wild Over Waterways team ran the
WOW Passport scheme offering a range of 12 activities including dry canoeing
and coracle building in addition to the more traditional activities. Around
180 passports were issued during the weekend.
Members of the Waterways Recovery Group [wrg]
were on site for almost a week assisting with the provision of site
services, car parking and a whole host of other jobs.
Organisers gained sponsorship from Arnside
& Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; Awards For All; Cumbria
County Council; Lancaster Canal Restoration Partnership; Rural Regeneration
Cumbria and the Westmorland County Agricultural Society Ltd. British
Waterways supported the event by building a slipway suitable for trailed
craft.
Festival Chairman, Audrey Smith, expressed
herself delighted with the outcomes of the Festival. "We campaigned; we
raised the profile of the Northern Reaches; we demonstrated public support
for the restoration - both locally and nationally; we had a happy Festival
and I believe we shall have made a modest profit which will contribute to
the restoration of the canal to Kendal." |
