LANCASTER CANAL RESTORATION UPDATE
NW/077/03 Restoration of the Lancaster Canal’s Northern Reaches will come under the spotlight at a public talk at Lancaster Town Hall on Wednesday 18 June. |
Starting at 7.30pm, the evening will outline
plans for the ambitious £50 million project and British Waterways manager
Debbie Lumb will provide an update on progress towards restoration. Northern
Reaches Restoration Group partners, will be available to answer questions.
The event is free and all are welcome. The project involves restoring the final 14½ mile (25km) Northern Reaches of the Lancaster Canal from Tewitfield, north of Carnforth, to Kendal. The popular canal was effectively blocked in the 1960s by the construction of the M6 which severed the waterway in three places. An independent study predicts the canal’s restoration will bring huge benefits to north Lancashire and south Cumbria, including more than 800 new jobs, new marinas, £45 million new private investment and an extra £21 million visitor income. |
