LANCASTER CANAL TRIP SPELLS WHIT“FUN”TIDE
NW/072/03
2 June 2003
Kendal’s Strickland Gate Methodist Church
is celebrating its 120th birthday celebrations with a programme of community
events – and one high spot is a Whitsuntide canal trip for church
youngsters.
The event recreates an old local tradition,
when children were spared the ‘sinful’ spectacle of Kendal Races being
staged over the holiday. |
MEDIA INVITATION
EVENT: Victoriana fun day for children, including canal trips
VENUE: Field adjacent to the Lancaster Canal and Crooklands Hotel, near
Kendal, off the A65.
TIME: 1.45pm, Saturday 7 June
CONTACT: Grahame Jackson mobile tel 07814 575 940
The period atmosphere will be enhanced by the
provision of Victorian dress for some participants, courtesy of the Abbot
Hall Collection.
In addition to the canal trips, there will
be a full programme of entertainment for the youngsters, with egg & spoon,
sack and three legged races, plus a picnic.
Church Co-ordinator Grahame Jackson said
the day would provide a fun packed experience for 5 to 11 year olds.
“Because this year is a special one in our
calendar, we are staging events that connect with the community and
demonstrate how the church still has a vibrant role to play in the wider
neighbourhood,” he added. |

million times each year by 10 million people, who spend around £1.5 billion
annually. In addition, British Waterways estimates that waterway restoration
has acted as a catalyst for £2 billion of regeneration investment.
