Another step for canal restoration

The latest in a series of restoration projects aimed at boosting plans to reopen the northern reaches of the Lancaster Canal to Kendal was officially unveiled this week.
A number of the town’s dignitaries – including mayor Marilyn Molloy and chairman of the Northern Reaches Group Hal Bagot – were on hand on Wednesday as the newly-relaid Natland Mill Beck bridge steps were revealed.
The £24,000 Kendal Civic Society project – to replace the cracked and slippery steps and install a handrail from Natland Mill Lane to the tow path – was made possible thanks to contributions from a number of local organisations including Kendal Town Council, South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County Council and Friends of the Lake District.
Patricia Hovey, Secretary of Kendal Civic Society, said she was “delighted” with the results: “Everyone responded generously, and it looks absolutely fabulous.”
